Water pollution in Bangladesh

Water for domestic use (bathing, washing)
People living in Apartment buildings of urban area are using water from tank. In rural area, people use reservoirs, and use water accumulated during the rainy season for bathing and washing clothes. Water shortage during the dry season is a quite severe problem.

Drink water
People usually need to boil water from the tap for drinking in the house.
In urban area, some people purchase 20-30ℓtank clean water. On the other hand, people in rural area still have to filter the water from tube wells and rain water.

Arsenic contamination
In 1993, arsenic pollution was found in Chapai Nawabganj prefecture. The following year, a patient with chronic arsenic poisoning was found in the same prefecture. Contamination rate: 29.19%, about 38,000 patients. As of 2010, there were about 36 million people drinking contaminated water.

Salinization of underground water
This is due to global warming and the consequent sea level rise. The situation in coastal areas is said to become more and more difficult.

Floods
Cyclones occurs at the turn of the season, between the rainy season and the dry season, April-May and October-November, causing extraordinary damage.

Water purification Bicycles

In Bangladesh, which has huge problems with water, especially drinking water, penetration of bicycle with water purifiers can be a big help to improve the quality of life. Since this system movable, it can also be used for disaster support such as floods.

Targeting the poor in rural and urban areas, we have been donating this system to local partner organizations. Aiming to improve the quality of life as a grassroots movement, we will expand our activities in order to run this system sustainably and smoothly.

We have conducted a demonstration of this bicycle system at the local school run by UBINIG.

First, we explained the mechanism of this system. Then we showed the demonstration and provided the purified water which was produced by cycling to teachers, students, parents.

Approximately 200 children, age of 3 to 10 years old, are enrolled in this school.
The well water in this area has a high iron content and it is difficult to drink safely.

For the demonstration, we used water from the pond inside the school. Student draw water by themselves to experience all the procedure.

Student : It is so amazing that we can drink water from the pond. It was so yummy and I had many glasses of water.

Teacher : During school time, kids will drink a lot of water. Since well water contents high amount of iron, if we can have this bicycle system we can enjoy drinking water.

Future Development

We will carry out this project from the survey stage jointly with local partner organizations, to ensure that this activity continues.
